THE ORIGINAL WIND METER APP DESIGNED TO MEASURE WIND SPEED DIRECTLY ON YOUR PHONE

No CELL TOWER or signal is necessary! Wind Meter works by measuring the volume of wind flowing over your iPhone microphone and converting it into an effective wind speed reading in REAL TIME at your location!

As quoted by: KITELIFE MAGAZINE -

"In our own field tests here at KITELIFE, we found that in a relatively consistent wind speed of 3-28 mph, the Wind Meter app was surprisingly accurate."

As quoted by: BLUE WATER SAILING MAGAZINE -

"We were really jazzed to see this new wind speed app for the iPhone and downloaded it right away. It is really cool and will be appreciated by sailors everywhere."

As quoted by: PANBO MARINE ELECTRONICS -

"Would you believe it? -- it actually works. I was out testing and photographing the NMEA 2000 wind rig early this morning and thus could compare Wind Meter to a consensus of five high quality sensors mounted just a few feet over my head".
Ben Ellison - PANBO MARINE ELECTRONICS

As quoted by: ROBERT JOHNSON MENS MID-d & DISTANCE COACH, CORNELL UNIVERSITY CO-FOUNDER, LETSRUN.COM -

"As a Division 1 Track Coach and operator of LetsRun.com, I was stunned to learn that the iphone could measure wind speed. This app works as advertised and is a lot of fun to take to a track meet." Robert Johnson - CORNELL UNIVERSITY

OTHER REAL WORLD USERS:

“Was at Seaside on the weekend and a guy had the app. We put it up next to a wind meter and was only off from the wind meter by 1 mph--pretty impressed.”

“Works real good; pretty accurate side by side with other handheld meters. seems to have better averaging [as compared with skywatch]”
Reference: http://forums.iwindsurf.com/viewtopic.php?p=102262

"First Test Proved it For Me, Very clever app! By chance its blowing tonight, so I went up to our flat roof and stood a few feet below our Davis instruments anemometer. The Davis recorded a max gust of about 26 mph while the max I recorded with the Wind Meter was 23 mph. Had I climbed a ladder, I expect the readings would have been even closer."

OPERATORS MANUAL:

When you open the Wind Meter APP the screen will rotate so that the microphone end of the phone will now be on top. To obtain the best wind speed readings, simply hold the iphone upright and straight out to your side with the screen facing you, letting the wind slip over the top of the phone, and push Get Wind! Wait at least 5-10 seconds and then push Got Wind! The final reading is the average for the period. The Wind Meter estimates wind speeds from 4-28 mph. We recommend that you test the Wind Meter for your particular iPhone or type of use, using only natural wind and a commercial grade anemometer for comparisons. While the default calibration is appropriate for many phones, if your iOS device appears to over or under measure, you can easily calibrate your phones Wind Meter Application by pushing the Calibrate button. Due to the necessary installation of a noise dampener, the Wind Meter is most effective in consistent winds. For the same reason, it begins to effectively estimate wind speeds that are above 5mph. Additionally, Wind Meter cannot measure wind speeds over 28mph (hurricane strength winds) since this equates to the max decibel level an iPhone can detect.

This application is not intended to replace commercial grade anemometers or scientific instrumentation.

Wind Meter supports multiple units of measure including Miles Per Hour, Knots, Kilometers Per Hour, Beaufort, Feet Per Second, and Meters Per Second.

Pros and cons of Wind Meter app for iPhone and iPad

Wind Meter app good for

I was thinking about such app, but was too lazy to make it. Good job - looks like the real thing and very acurate too.
This is a must have app for all you R/C pilots out there. Ive used this app on several occasions prior to flying at my local R/C club and am surprised how well it works. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because of the ocaisional "ambiant" noise issue. Ive talked with the developer and was told they are working on improving this app. At $.99 this app is a steal...
I think this is a great application. As a boater I am often concerned with weather and wind and this handy application is most helpful. I have recommended it to many of my sailing friends.
i was a bit reluctant to spend the .99 for it since most apps are sometimes just humor. ie the Finger Scan / Weight Scale. i decided that id would just bit the bullet. ive never owned a Wind Meter before, i never need one ... i can just pick my kite size and be okay with it and if its too much size down. i can see the novelty in a Wind Meter just to know the wind speed for that moment / day. However i cant justify spending $59.00 on one, so the .99 was the better deal. does it work? honestly yes, I first tried to blow on it and it read 2km. it doesnt read heater heat though. lol. i used this a park where Weather Network said 20km and app by the water said 21km. so its close lastly, it was a still winter dark bike ride home so i had my bike GPS on and drove one handed to see a reading. Garmin GPS 605 said 25.5 km and the iphone read 24 km i have no affiliation with the developer but if you want a Wind Meter, get the app.
Im just getting into dryer vent cleaning and was gong to buy an actual anemometer to test air speed coming out the vents before and after. Stumbled upon this app and figured I save myself $40-50. A friend in the biz told me a cleaned vent should output 8 mps minimum. My recently cleaned vent outputted 9 mps. Im not going to suggest this app is bang on accurate but at least I should be able to see a before and after difference with it. BTW, using on an iPad even tho its meant to work with iPhone mic.
I compared reading to my Kestrel 4000, and had to chuckle. It was within 1 mph in a 10 mph. breeze. $450.00 for Kestrel, .99c for app.

Some bad moments

This app. Really does not work that well at all. My iPhone is in an Otterbox Defender series case, and I had little luck getting it to work without blowing directly on the mic hole area. I have "Smule" installed, and I am aware of any wind interference that the case may present. This is not the issue, as that app works fine with all the subtlties of air as I use it. This app is just not working so I would not say its worth getting. Also if you see I am the only one to rate this in 2010 ! So that must say something. I hope that the developers can figure out what it is that is wrong. We all have cases for our phones, so I cant see that being the issue.
Works only in gale force wind, or if you blow in mic. Dont waste your time and money
Does not work worth crap, dont waste your money like i did. If i could give it -5 strs i would
Not intuitive to use, and only actually works about 30% of the time, so also doubt the accuracy.
Can you please turn the screen around to be upside up geniuses?
Do not waste your .99c on this useless app. Ive never been able to get it to work.
